The Produce Traceability Initiative, sponsored by Canadian Produce Marketing Association, Produce Marketing Association and United Fresh Produce Association, is designed to help the industry maximize the effectiveness of current traceback procedures, while developing a standardized industry approach to enhance the speed and efficiency of traceability systems for the future.

DataBar Online was created to allow sellers of produce to communicate their item numbers used inside of the DataBar (the GTIN) to their buyers, and to allow buyers to download the information into their Point-of-Sale systems to scan the DataBar on loose/bulk items. Retailers can also search for those suppliers who supply a specific commodity.

The International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) provides an international forum to address issues which require international harmonization or standardization for the produce sectors and creates the first incorporated body constitued of national organizations providing direct representation of their respective countries' constituents.

The DataBar bar code provides the ability to scan and capture manufacturer/brand identification at the point of sale on loose produce items which currently carry the PLU.
