Technology & Standards: GS1 DataBar: Composite Barcode
This family of barcodes is administered by GS1 US. The current recommendation by GS1 US for the food industry is to use the GS1 DataBar or the GS1 DataBar Stacked Omnidirectional. The intent of GS1 US is to use the 14-digit number structure inside of these barcodes called the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN).
The GS1 DataBar family of barcodes has great potential for use in the produce industry. However, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the use of this technology and its longevity in light of the recent activity around RFID. PMA is currently working with other fresh food trade associations to further investigate the viability of the GS1 DataBar barcode. This presentation from GS1 US will provide you with additional information on GS1 DataBar. |
