U.S. in Transition: Environmental Protection Agency Administrator

Scott Pruitt, the newly confirmed administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, is calling for a threefold strategy to run the EPA: rule of law, cooperative federalism and public participation. “The purpose of environmental regulation is to make things regular, and to do so fairly without picking winners and losers,” he said. “The agency must be committed to using its expertise in environmental issues, not to end run Congress.”

U.S. President Donald Trump released the “Reducing Regulation and Controlling Regulatory Costs” executive order (EO) on Jan. 30. It instructs federal agencies to rescind two regulations for each new regulation. The impact this order has on proposed regulations related to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and product labeling relative to the Nutrition Facts Panel and the new genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling law is being closely monitored.

U.S. in Transition Health and Human Services Secretary

Dr. Tom Price, a retired orthopedic surgeon, has been confirmed as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Given Secretary Price’s background and expected role in major administration initiatives, it is anticipated the yet-to-be-named commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — an agency within HHS and whose commissioner reports to the Secretary of HHS — will have a primary role in the administration’s goals and positions on PMA’s food and nutrition issues, including Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) implementation.

If confirmed, he will also be the third Agriculture Secretary to have actually lived and worked in agriculture throughout his life.
