Consumers are the last line of defense in preventing foodborne illness. Industry and government play significant roles in food safety, and PMA members have told us that we need to help consumers understand their role as well. That’s why PMA supports the Partnership for Food Safety Education, which educates consumers through science-based, consumer-tested messaging.
The Partnership, with support from the Food Marketing Institute Foundation and PMA, introduced ProducePro, a new campaign to help consumers safely prepare and enjoy fresh produce with simple home safety practices. PMA members can use these free tools in their own consumer outreach.
ProducePro offers evidence-based, actionable “6 Smart ProducePro Practices”:
- check for bruising or damage
- clean hands, surfaces and utensils
- rinse fresh produce
- avoid cross-contamination
- chill cut produce appropriately
- discard damaged or cross-contaminated produce
Help consumers make smart choices when handling fresh fruits and vegetables with these tools: graphics and digital assets, signage and posters, produce bags, recipe cards, social media content, circular content for in-store and external consumer communications, brochures, talking points, PowerPoint presentations and tips to help explain safe handling practices to consumers.
You can use them to ensure that last link in the safety chain is handling produce safely.
