In late 2015, the Boards of United Fresh Produce Association (United Fresh) and Produce Marketing Association (PMA) formed a Joint Committee on Responsible Labor Practices. The Joint Committee was launched with representation among suppliers and buyers, and is being co-chaired by Brian Kocher of Castellini Group of Companies on behalf of United Fresh, and Russell Mounce of Walmart on behalf of PMA.
Our two associations did this because we share a vision to establish a voluntary industry framework to reach and/or confirm an environment where fruits, vegetables and flowers are grown and sourced responsibly.
Our action plan for 2017 is focused on four key elements in this mission:
- Gain alignment across the industry on guiding principles and values for industry-wide responsible labor practices;
- Expand participation and build support for an industry-wide effort towards responsible labor practices;
- Provide tools that facilitate and drive opportunities for harmonization and convergence of verification efforts;
- Communicate, reinforce, and promote responsible labor practices across the industry.
Responsible labor practices are an important issue for our industry, and we recognize the growing interest of stakeholders in transparency throughout the global supply chain. Thus, on this website, PDF files of the Joint Committee’s key deliverables are available for download below:
We will continue to update this website as we develop our action plan and progress on our work to support industry efforts in the Ethical Charter’s implementation.
We want our members to know that this will not be a short process or an easy one. But, we believe this is a critical discussion we need to have as an industry. We anticipate this will be a continuing dialogue with our members, the broader global produce and floral industry, and other stakeholders. We welcome your views along the way.
