In the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd and the pain and sorrow we have witnessed among our fellow citizens, colleagues, and communities around the globe, the Produce Marketing Association and the Center for Growing Talent, with support from our Boards of Directors, issue the following statement. And with it a promise to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within our organizations and across the produce and floral industry.
The death of George Floyd outraged the Produce Marketing Association and Center for Growing Talent. It joins a list of systemic injustices and inhumane treatment of people of color. Black lives do indeed matter. Systemic racism is insidious, and we condemn it unequivocally.
The world—and PMA and CGT—need to do better. Our vision is to grow a healthier world for everyone, not just for a few. We do not have all the answers, but we have been listening and looking for a place to start. So, effective immediately, our Boards of Directors are increasing the importance and urgency of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in our strategic plans. We will create better opportunities for people of color to enter, advance, and do business not only at PMA and CGT, but within the industries they represent.
This will be ongoing work designed to achieve permanent change.
