PMA A-NZ Tech & Innovation Focus event – Big Data, AI & Machine Learning

What do you think when you hear ‘AI’? Is data giving you grief?

PMA A-NZ will be holding its first Technology & Innovation Focus Event, the main stand-alone event for the pillar of the year, on the 22nd of August in Brisbane. The focus for this year’s event is that of big data, AI and machine learning.

The event will bring together a number of leaders from within and outside of the fresh produce and floral industries to discuss these key topics and the benefits and issues associated with them. It will provide attendees with not only a greater insight into the use of the technologies but enable them to be better prepared to adopt and utilize them.

The event will run from 9:15am to 1.15pm, including morning tea and lunch, providing an opportunity to network and discuss the insights from the day.

Jason SwainGeneral Manager Information Systems at Seeka Limited


Jason is the General Manager of Information Systems at Seeka Limited and has been in the NZ Kiwifruit Industry for over 18 years. He is responsible for driving the strategy and development of the IS business service. 
Leveraging the experience from his time in post-harvest has allowed Jason to deliver many significant technologies that have shaped the way Seeka now does business. 
Jason is responsible for ensuring Seeka retains a technological advantage, remaining ahead in their industry. This has lead to the implementation of a capacity planning tool enabling future planning for inventory capacity on a company wide level. He has also provided Seeka growers with innovative new solutions including the development of an application built on big data and providing real time information. 
He continues to seek new ways to drive business growth and service to customers through information systems. 


Emma Mitchell, Senior Associate Lawyer at Watermark Intellectual Property


Emma is a Senior Associate lawyer at Watermark Intellectual Property, and has specialised in intellectual property law for over 15 years. Emma has worked with clients from a variety of industries to identify, protect, commercialise and enforce their intellectual property rights in order to give them a significant competitive advantage. In addition to trade marks, patents, copyright and designs, Emma provides advice in relation to commercial contracts associated with intellectual property, such as licensing, supply, manufacturing, research and development, branding, collaboration and sponsorship. She has also represented clients in notable intellectual property cases before the Federal Court of Australia. Emma’s focus is on getting to know her clients so she can provide practical, relevant and commercial solutions that fit within an overarching business strategy.


Antonio Palanca, CEO and Co-Founder of The HiveXchange


Antonio is an experienced technology entrepreneur. Over the last 15 years he co-founded several successful technology and supply chain businesses both here and in Asia. Prior to this he held senior management positions at IBM, Sun and Optus and was directly involved in many of the technology shifts that we now take for granted :  the shift from private networks to the internet, B2B ecommerce, mass market mobile and self-service, and the rise of big data. In 2015 Antonio co-founded the HiveXchange with Damian George, a well-known fresh produce industry leader.  Together they have created Australia’s first fully operational digital wholesale fresh produce marketplace that is now supporting commercial trading in national and international markets.


Julian Butler, General Manager Big Data Analytics at Telstra

Julian Butler is the Product Owner of Telstra Data Hub, an industry data sharing initiative designed to fundamentally transform data sharing and analytics nationally. Prior to taking this role Julian was General Manager in Big Data at Telstra, and played a leading role in creating and executing the company wide big data and analytics strategy. He has over twenty years international experience in leveraging data technologies to transform business operations.


Warren Jennings, Head of Strategic Growth at Telstra

Warren Jennings is the Head of Strategic Growth at Telstra Enterprise. For over two decades Warren has focused on how emerging and disruptive technologies can create value and solve real world problems for enterprises. Warren works extensively in key industries including agribusiness, retail, logistics, financial services and mining.


Emily White, Senior Marketer


Emily is a Senior Marketer with 15+ years diverse experience across domestic& global beverage & agribusiness industries including Treasury Wine Estates & Boomaroo Nurseries, including it's latest no-touch nursery facility.  With studies in Agri related Science, Digital Marketing & having delivered many considered  B2C & B2B integrated campaigns utilising both traditional & digital platforms  - sees the importance of data / technology in connecting with the consumer / customer, product & supply chain traceability & advancing decision making into the future.
